Meet the author behind the page

I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.”

I’m more than an author.

You can find me sitting at my desk in my writing studio (I’m there most mornings around 5), sitting in the stands watching my daughter Hadley play soccer, or sitting in a natatorium watching my other daughter, Harper, swim. I’m usually confused and really hungry during both of these endeavors.

If I’m not writing or watching my girls throw themselves with arms wide open at the world, I am at a coffee shop reading or thinking about writing, roaming the aisles at Target, running the Ann Arbor Arboretum where there’s a fairy and troll forest, or searching the stacks at the local libraries for the perfect book that will finally teach me how to knit and thus make all my dreams come true.

I’ve been a middle school teacher, an At-Risk Literacy Specialist, and currently I’m an Adjunct English Professor at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I’ve also been an aerobics instructor at the University at Notre Dame, which was a blast because I love having a microphone and I love to dance. This was a fantastic combination, plus, I can now say that technically I taught at Notre Dame.

I am the author of The Teacher Diaries, and Twirl (TS Poetry Press). I hold a BA in Education from Calvin University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University. I am a freelance writer for “The Banner,” and a contributing writer for Coffee+Crumbs.

Tell me a story that’s true.

Read my essays on Substack, where I do what I’ve been doing since 2007: making a place for my imagination to live; giving what seems impossible wings, and standing back to watch her spread those wings, to try and fly.
